Popular Music today can be extremely eclectic; previously imposed restrictive boundaries have been breached. We may hear a bit of classical or baroque mixed with a bit of folk mixed with a bit of rock; and production has become as important as the instruments and singing themselves. In order to nurture this evolution, it is time to re-think and to be more imaginative and creative in delivering music education. Now it needs to be packaged in such a way that relates to today’s society’s demands of music and uses of it; it needs to be relevant; it must meet the needs of keen amateurs, students and prospective professionals alike.
This is not to say that there is no further need for traditional school orchestras performing medleys of marches and light classical pieces. Undoubtedly this traditional approach has its place in providing an excellent grounding for many aspiring musicians. But this should be just one element in an arsenal of engaging, dynamic and relevant options.
One of the important raisons d’etre of the SoundPower Orchestra is to provide a flexible, dynamic resource for the delivery of relevant musical training and work experience to young musicians.
"The orchestra wants to be involved, not just listened to"
